The
Simple Truth about Choosing a Dentist
There
are LOTS of dentists in O’Fallon. I’ll be
the first to tell you that I might not be
right for everyone. I do feel though, that
you won’t find anyone else who cares about
creating a fun and “low-pressure” environment
as much as I do.
I try every day to make our office as “guilt-free”
and “lecture-free” as I possibly can. I
don’t care if it’s been 2 decades since
you’ve had a checkup. I won’t make you feel
6 inches tall by getting on a soap-box and
lecturing you about the “importance of maintaing
good oral health”.
Heck… I’m just happy that you made those
first steps through the door to our office!
I know how scary it can be for many people.
Just showing up for that first appointment
is a huge accomplishment and something to
be proud of.
“We love coming to the dentist
office! Ryan has been coming for
a year and everybody is wonderful,
very friendly with the children,
very professional and the kids
get great toys!”Jenny Hoshaw, O’Fallon,

What
Should I Expect When I Make An Appointment?
When
you call our office at (636)978-2226 you will
speak with one of our friendly receptionists,
April or Diana. They will assist you in finding
our first available time slot and help you
with any insurance questions you might have.
They are both experts in working with insurance
companies to maximize your insurance benefits.
When
you arrive at our office, you will be
introduced to one of our two hygienists,
Liz or Erin. They along with our assistants
Brittney, Leslie, and Carol will speak
with you regarding what you would like
to accomplish during the visit and will
collect any photographs or x-rays that
may be needed.
Our hygienists will also take the time that
visit to clean your teeth. They are very
well known in our area for providing very
gentle, yet thorough, care.
I will then meet with you for a few minutes
to discuss our findings and put together
a “roadmap” to take care of any dental problems
you may be experiencing. You will be given
plenty of chances to ask questions about
the proposed treatment – we want you to
be very comfortable with the plan that is
put together.
April or Diana will then help you determine
the best way to fit the plan into your insurance
benefits and budget.
What
Should My Kids Expect?
My
biggest goal with kids is to give them a positive
dental experience. Hundreds of patients have
told me about how they were traumatized in
the chair as a kid. And it’s made them terrified
of going to the dentist.
I don’t ever want to do this to a child. Their
“mental health” is just as important to me
as their “dental health”!
We always like to see kids by their third
birthday. Even if they are younger than this
we still want them to be receiving care. If
you have a toddler of any age and have ANY
concerns about their teeth… please call us.
We try to make their first visit a “happy
visit”. If this means that we only get to
“count their teeth” and give them a toothbrush
and toy as they leave… THAT’S GREAT!
”I’ve
been coming to Dr.Dolson’s office
for 3 years, and I love coming
here because the moment I walk
in the door they treat you like
a friend and the kids love coming
here without any fear, they love
to go to the dentist.”

Some kids let us do lots of things on their
first visit; some won’t let us do anything.
We always try to identify any problem areas
so that the appropriate treatment can be
discussed.
Some kids who are extremely young and need
lots of work or are just a little too rambunctious
for me to handle may be referred to one
of the excellent pediatric dentists in our
area. It’s all about finding the right dentist
to give each child a positive dental experience.
Regardless of how much or how little we
do for a child, they will always leave our
office with a great toy from our treasure
box. I think I can promise you that there
is not an office with a better toy box than
ours!
Can
I Really Watch Movies While I Get My Teeth
Worked On?
Absolutely!
I find that having the ear phones on
and the big screen right in front of
your eyes is a great distraction away
from what I’m doing.
We have a pretty good library of DVDs
on hand in the office, but if you have
a certain movie you’ve been craving…
just bring it with you.
This works
especially good for kids. Many times when
I treat children they almost enter a trance
when the screen comes on (just like at home)!
They barely pay attention to me – which
is exactly what I want!
Many people request to have a movie going
while breathing the “relaxing gas” – nitrous
oxide. I gotta say this is a great solution
for the nervous patient. And from personal
experience I can tell you that watching
Disney’s “Fantasia” while using the nitrous
is pretty cool! I swear though… I have only
done this while I was actually getting dental
work done. I promise – I wouldn’t joke about
that!
"I
come to Dr. Mark because I adore
him, he is a very good dentist,
and he’s never hurt me. I’ve let
him drill even with no Novocain.
It’s like coming to see family,
they are wonderful people and
he does a really great job.”

Do
I Call You “Dr. Dolson”, ”Dr. Mark”, “Doc”,
or just “Mark”?
You
know… I really don’t care just as long
as you call me!
I’m very comfortable with patients calling
me by my first name, but a few patients
find this awkward. So for them “Dr.
Dolson” is simply more comfortable.
And I’m fine with that.
But… I find that some dentists and doctors
feel that once they’ve earned the title
“doctor” they start feeling like they
are automatically “better” than the
people they are treating.
I think this attitude is kind of silly.
I’ve discovered more from many of my patients
about life, raising a family, and even business
than I learned during all those years of
school.
Several of my patients have told me about
there service in World War II and Vietnam.
I’ve found out about many great new restaurants
in St. Louis from my patients, and I even
bought my first home from one of my patients!
So really – you’d make my day if you felt
comfortable enough to just call me “Mark”!
“We
have been coming to Dr.Dolson
for over 7 years. He’s great with
my kids, he’s up to date with
the latest technology and we would
not go anywhere else!””

How
Did All Those Celebrities Become Patients
of Yours?
Some
people collect stamps. Others collect baseball
cards. I collect “celebrity patients”!
For me, it’s really fun to see how many
people from my favorite TV shows I can bring
to my dental office.
Yea… the rest of my family thinks I’m weird
too!
Rupert
Boneham
Survivor Pearl Islands
and Survivor All Stars
The
fun started with my favorite realty
TV star from my favorite TV show, Survivor.
A couple years ago we were planning
a “Patient Appreciation Party”. My plan
was to have all kinds of inflatable
slides and bounce houses in the parking
lot, along with carnival games and face
painting.
I really wanted to make it unique and special,
so I racked my brain for several weeks trying
to come up with a “twist”.
One night I was looking up Survivor stuff
on the internet, and came across Rupert’s
website. I emailed him to see if he could
come out and take pictures with my patients.
It turns out that he was actually having
a really bad toothache when my email came
in, and he and his wife and daughter just
decided to drive 5 hours (all the way from
Indianapolis) to meet us.
We hit it off well, and Rupert actually
ended up having his entire smile re-made!
As
he will tell you in his video, he has
always been an extremely phobic dental
patient. And even now it still is not
his favorite thing to do. But… every
so often he drives 5 five hours to let
us clean his teeth!
After getting his smile re-done, he
attended our big party and spent 5 hours
taking pictures with over 300 of our
patients!

“Jedi”
Howie, “Chicken” George, and James
Big Brother All-Stars
A
few months after our “Survivor Party”,
I started watching Big Brother All-Stars.
And I got sucked into it. I even started
watching the “live feeds” over the internet
and going to websites devoted to the
show.
A few days after they all got released
from the house, I was reading an interview
where Howie said he and George were
going to go down to Mexico to get some
dental work done together. Well… this
is just a bad idea in more ways than
I can explain here.
I contacted him through his website
offered him our services. It turns out
that he and his girlfriend were planning
a cross country trip from his home in
LA to his parent’s house in Chicago.
They ended up making a pit-stop in St.
Louis to get their teeth whitened and
some other work done!

Shortly
after meeting with us, Howie told George
that we were the “real deal” and that
a trip to St. Louis would be much better
than a trip to Mexico! It wasn’t long
before Chicken George drove down from
north of Chicago to get his fillings
completed!

Both
of them ended going out for drinks with
James Rhine, another contestant on Big
brother All-Stars. Come to find out
that James is petrified of dentists.
It took him 7 months to bite the bullet
and call us. He and his girlfriend Rachel
were getting ready to go to Australia
to do a month of modeling work. Right
before they left, they drove down to
St. Louis from Chicago to get their
teeth cleaned and whitened.

What
Will My First Visit Be Like?
For
adults, we first find out the reason why
you picked up the phone to see us. For most
people, it is just for a checkup and cleaning.
For others, it is because they are having
a raging toothache and they need relief…
fast!
Whatever your reason for visiting us, we
will try to accomplish it that day.
We will also put together a plan that puts
you on the road to having a healthy smile.
I’ll do everything I can to give you several
options that might work for you. If you
have specific concerns, like the number
of times you’ll have to take off work or
keeping things under a certain budget, just
let me know.
We’re pretty flexible.
“I’ve
been coming to Dr.Dolson for about
2 years. I had a bunch of problems
with my teeth and he took care
of them. The main reason I keep
coming back is because him and
his staff are very professional
and very nice people.”

Will
You Give Me Treatment Options?
It
is likely that some people reading this
are in pretty bad shape dentally. When presenting
treatment options in these situations, whenever
possible I will try to give as many options
as I can. There are many ways to treat most
conditions.
It’s a lot like re-modeling your kitchen.
For some people, just new wallpaper would
make them happy. For others, not only do
they want new wallpaper, they also want
new cabinets, new ceramic tile, and new
fixtures.
I respect whatever your goals are in taking
care of your teeth, and I’ll do whatever
I can to help you achieve the level of health
you desire.
For some people, this might mean doing the
minimal amount necessary to get by – a few
fillings, maybe removal of some of the worst
ones, etc. And then more comprehensive care
when the time is right.
Many people, however, are at a point where
they would just like to go ahead and get
everything fixed the right way and “right
away”.
Often this might involve several crowns,
some cosmetic work on the front teeth, and
the replacement of missing teeth. As you
can see from the pictures above we did all
of this for Rupert. And it changed his life.
“We
have been coming to Dr.Dolson’s
office since the day he opened
his doors. The family just loves
the services we get from Dr.Dolson
and his staff.”

Regardless
of the level of care you are looking for,
we will ALWAYS let you know before starting
treatment what your costs will be. My biggest
pet peeve is hearing stories about how a
patient went to an office, treatment was
started, and then finished, and then they
got a bill in the mail that far exceeded
what they were expecting.
I never want to do this to patients!
“My
husband and I come to see Dr.Dolson.
I have actually convinced my husband
to come here because he was scared
of the dentist. The staff is friendly
and it is a wonderful experience.”

Our
Secret Weapon!
The
one part of my practice that I am most proud
of is the team that we have assembled to assist
you.
Over the years I have become friends with
each member of our team, and I would be very
comfortable with every single one of them
babysitting my two children.
As a matter of fact… most of them have!
From
your first phone call to your cleaning
to your dental work, you can rest assured
that each lady assisting you is friendly,
competent, and one of the best in their
position in all of St. Louis.
Many of our patients have let me know
that the main reason they keep coming
back is because they love the atmosphere
at our office and they “feed off ” the
energy of our staff.
This makes me proud!
“My
family has been coming here for
31/2 years, since we moved from
Illinois. We are very happy with
the service we’ve had here. We
have had good luck getting appointments.
They are always on time. 3 out
of the 5 of us have had the whitening
done here and are very satisfied
with the procedure and the low
cost of it. I also had porcelain
veneers re-done here and I’m very
happy with the quality of the
work. I really enjoy coming here.
It’s like a family organization.
Everyone is really happy and we
like coming and visiting.”

20 year and 30 year anniversaries!
We have a beautiful daughter Reese who
is 4 and a half years old, and a brand
new son that is 5 months old.
I can promise you that I won’t do any
dentistry for your or your family that
I wouldn’t do for my own!
